I have been facing issues yesterday
It seems Antix Linux without GUI, is not optimized to be set up in a virtual machine. I got stuck during partitioning, and while I could probably have solved this by asking people (online documentation is sparse on the GUI-less installation), I read about a whole host of other problems that would arise during install. Having seen how little info is readily available online I decided to not waste precious time and called it a day.

I went to bed and very early in the morning started thinking how to move forward.

I have not yet found a Linux distro that
- uses GNU
- does not use systemd
- has an optimized GUI-less version

You see it is also a fact that often when they offer very basic versions without GUI, that a lot of other stuff is also not ready, like internet for example, or package management, etc. Another option is to install a full version and then remove the GUI. But then I need to know what I am doing so that everything else stays functional, or that I at least understand what remains functional and what not. I do not have enough time to tinker endlessly until I got what I need, with few information online, etc, because I need to make progress with C programming fast. I need a command-line focused distro that works out of the box in a virtual machine. This is Alpine. But Alpine has no GNU...

The reason I want an OS without GUI is mainly that Windows XP 32bit's 4GB accessible memory is not sufficient to run a modern Linux with GUI in a virtual machine.

Another solution could be is to use Windows 7 bit as base OS, to have access to 8 GB, and then run a GUI Linux in a VM. But then I alienate all true 32bit CPU's because they can not run a 64bit OS..

Since one of my key principles is to use old hardware as daily driver, not merely as museum pieces, hardware needs to have 4GB RAM at the minimum to be recoverable, because that is what is required to use it for daily driving. Modern internet requires that amount to run, sadly, due to all the unnecessary bloat that is being used these days.

Now I want to find out how much purely 32bit hardware could actually run 4GB RAM. If that is a small pool, and I do not lose too much older hardware, then using Windows 7 64bit would not be out of the question for me. It would also solve a few issues I have with forward compatibility, like using 64bit requiring software, like certain communication apps, to communicate with my family (now I am using live dvd's for that, which makes it harder to stay in touch).

If using Windows 7 64bit does rule out a lot of, otherwise suitable, hardware then I might use Alpine Linux without GNU - if their reasons are only minimization of size and not political. If the latter is true then no way I will use it.

So these things I am going to find out now and will post news once I know what's the deal..
